Here’s clear evidence that West Coast skate style was inspired by classic utilitarian work wear. These Dickies look like they’ve seen an actual factory or two and the chain is probably holding down a wad of life savings. This man said he’d rather be photographed in his Legion suit but he was obliging nonetheless. I wish I’d paid attention to his button but I imagine it’s a labour slogan.

I really had to hustle to catch up with this man, a retired architect and photographer. He bought his first camera with a thousand cigarettes on a black market in the 1950s, then paid his way through school with one (very) good photograph of Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill. His cheery yellow pants, jaunty stride and storytelling skills were a welcome start to my day.

This Morgan Freeman doppelganger did not want to fiddle around! He gave me 30 seconds to capture his image. I love his aviators and his got-no-time attitude.

This gentleman looks like he’s staged a revolution or two in his lifetime. His corduroy flat cap, retro New Balance sneakers and 40′s era army-green field jacket caught my attention from two blocks away. And those eyes — there’s a thousand stories in those eyes.
