GP Street Snaps: Fisherman

This captain is a retired fisherman who gives tours around the harbour at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, just to stay close to the water. He used to bring in 500,000 pounds of fish in a two-week trip. And he says he’d still be out there if his back would let him.

Ancestral Photo Remake
This photo was taken on my grandmother’s wedding day in December of 1940. She was working as a housekeeper at the time and my mother tells me that she scraped and saved up for her petite blue crepe dress, simple heels and cute little hat. She was married in the Catholic Church in Chatham Ontario but had an agreement with her husband that she would never raise her children this way. Grandma Rossie was a devoted mom of five children, was an incredibly hard worker and was a woman of great faith. I still remember going to the Bothwell Baptist Church with her on Sunday mornings and giggling in the pew. A wonderful woman with great fashion sense.

Rainy Days
Even as I hurried across the street, head down to avoid the rain, this bright white jacket and zebra print bag found their way into the corner of my eye. I doubled back and met Katherine, who is 87 years old and is still turning heads.
Sunglasses, Earrings and Mystique
My Grandma and I were in Jacksonville, Oregon – a historic city since the late 1800s – we found a bench in the sun in front of an old bank. She’s always got one of her pairs of glasses on and always has a different pair of earrings on… easy on the lens.

Ancestral Photo Remake
This photo of ma was taken in 1936 when she was 20-years-old, living in India in a British Colony as family legend dictates. She was 10 years younger than I in this photo but she seems far wiser, far older. I guess folks just grew up faster back then. Ma, born Christina Goggins, is the single most influential person in my life, even though we met but a few times. She’s the reason I started Lester’s Army, a magazine that gets youth and seniors talking and sharing their stories. What I do know about her is she had a distinct sense of style, and when polio took her ability to walk without a cane as a young person, she could still rock a mean polyester blouse, several of which I have in my keeping. I’m honored to have her blue eyes (nose, mouth and hair?) and her heart.

Ancestral Photo Remake

My grandma and her sister-in-law are at Gun Lake near Braelorne, British Columbia. It’s 1945 or 1946.
My grandma wasn’t a high-maintenance woman. Time and money was scant, so her approach to style was modest and practical. She never wore her hair like this, so we assume it was a day for special hair. And how special it is! After a mad amount of pins, rollers, sprays, love and attention at Prep Work Hair Studio, my hair finally popped itself into the neat bouffant you see here.
I found the clothes at Salvation Army. They’re more ’90s bourgeois than ’40s military but I was able to use pins to wrangle the outfit into a decent replica of my grandma’s (way cooler) suit.
If nothing else, my ancestral photo remake should make you think, “I can do better than that!”

Hawaiian Mama

This foxy grandma was spotted on the North Coast of Oahu, Hawaii. She says people call her Aunt Betty and she has lived in Hawaii for over 50 years with her husband. Both are in their 80′s. She certainly looks well adjusted to the tropical climate.
The Captains

These two gentlemen were having a conversation under the watchful eye of Capt. John “Gassy Jack” Deighton, a talkative saloon keeper who was the first to settle in Gastown in Vancouver. After taking the photo, one gentleman surprised me when he said he runs a social media site called Sowhatdoyouthink.com. Not all Captains sail ships.
Rose Glasses

This is a photo of a volunteer at Carnegie Community Centre named Marilyn. She always rocks a top bun, a smart jacket, classic but subtly matching colours and a pair of oh so stylish rose coloured glasses. A sort of Katherine Hepburn with a sunny outlook.
