Jeanne pulls out this sassy, striped dress every summer. She’s been doing so for well over 30 years and it still looks remarkable! She remembers buying it when Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Were Made for Walkin was a big hit and a low waist on clothing was all the rage. What a lovely summer outfit.

This photo was taken on my grandmother’s wedding day in December of 1940. She was working as a housekeeper at the time and my mother tells me that she scraped and saved up for her petite blue crepe dress, simple heels and cute little hat. She was married in the Catholic Church in Chatham Ontario but had an agreement with her husband that she would never raise her children this way. Grandma Rossie was a devoted mom of five children, was an incredibly hard worker and was a woman of great faith. I still remember going to the Bothwell Baptist Church with her on Sunday mornings and giggling in the pew. A wonderful woman with great fashion sense.

I love the creativity that went into putting this outfit together! The silver strappy sandals complement the bold print skirt and match her chunky silver ring and pendant necklace. I accidentally had my camera set to manual focus (an amateur photographer’s worst nightmare) and coincidentally the camera chose to focus on her shoes!

After speaking with this colourful gal, I quickly realized that her bold style choices matched her personality perfectly – she’s energetic and full of life.
Asking what her style inspiration was, she explained that she followed ‘What Not to Wear‘ for about five seasons and that she learned the importance of including “one piece that pops”. Well it worked because the first thing I noticed was her bright green bag. Such superb and fun style!
This woman has a really fun-loving way about her and her outfit speaks to this quality. I love the silk turquoise blouse and that she chose to tie it in the middle, a favorite trick of mine.

Often I look at this type of fashion on young hipsters and I wonder ‘would that still look good on an older person? or is being young what makes the outfit work?’ Often in hipster fashion being young is what makes an outfit tolerable, but in the case of this silk polka dot collared dress, it’s sexy at any age. This is the type of clothing I want to be stocking my closet with not the stuff I’ll look back at and say ‘What was I thinking!’

The beautiful woman works in a specialty shop in The Empress Hotel in Victoria. She couldn’t have chosen better colors for the setting and she is just oozing with grace.

This woman has collected over thirty purses! She explained that it is actually quite practical to have an abundance of purses because they don’t wear out from overuse and therefore you don’t need to replace them so often. I like her logic! Unfortunately you can’t see her cute purple hand bag here very well, but check out a close up of her broach and shades below.
