When talking about my Nana one of the first things I say is that we are basically the same person, with a difference of 50 years. Spending time with her reminds me of my own creativity, intelligence, humour and beauty – because to be related to such a graceful woman must mean that I too possess at least a sliver of that grace. I am grateful everyday to have her in my life. I love you Nana.

My grandmother is a no nonsense kind of woman with a schedule for everything, but this picture captures an unguarded moment of far away eyes and a touch of a whimsical smile. I have to wonder if it is from her that my mother and I get our imagination and tendency to dream? I wish that I was closer with my Gramma June growing up both in distance and in relationship, but in this process of emulation I did feel a connection to her, and not only in our shared taste in fashion! (Don’t you love the jacket?) As I set my hair and coloured my lips I imagined my beautiful Gramma June as the sweet young woman in this picture having the same kindness, strong will and sharp mind as she has today!

It was February 2011. My grandma and I were in a store in Jacksonville, Oregon. I found some glasses made out of strainers and asked her if I could take her picture, she didn’t hesitate…

This photo was taken on my grandmother’s wedding day in December of 1940. She was working as a housekeeper at the time and my mother tells me that she scraped and saved up for her petite blue crepe dress, simple heels and cute little hat. She was married in the Catholic Church in Chatham Ontario but had an agreement with her husband that she would never raise her children this way. Grandma Rossie was a devoted mom of five children, was an incredibly hard worker and was a woman of great faith. I still remember going to the Bothwell Baptist Church with her on Sunday mornings and giggling in the pew. A wonderful woman with great fashion sense.

My Grandma and I were in Jacksonville, Oregon – a historic city since the late 1800s – we found a bench in the sun in front of an old bank. She’s always got one of her pairs of glasses on and always has a different pair of earrings on… easy on the lens.

I attended the Whistler Film Festival opening gala Wednesday night with my husband, who worked on the opening movie Daydream Nation and there were dozens of gorgeous, fabulously dressed seniors. This woman is the aunt of Reece Thompson, one of the leads in the film. She told me she is a costume designer by trade and can always count on looking chic in her white cotton shirt.

Wayne caught my eye from across the room and when I complimented him on his look he said he’s not entirely happy with his haircut, as it used to be a huge fro. I told him his hair looks great, as is. I love his youthful look!

This sultry looking fellow refused to be photographed alone, so this lovely young woman with mile long lashes posed with him. He’s got that Neil Diamond look going for him: long scarf, silver chain and the most brilliant white teeth (and not just because of the flash).

It’s amazing what a scarf can do for an outfit. Just a little touch of color and class goes a long way, especially in winter when we are all bundled up. I love how this yellow scarf complements the flare of this woman’s skirt.

Some things, like leopard print scarves, will be in style for a long time and I don’t mind! Whether you are Joan Jett or her grandmother, a little leopard print is going to look great (especially with some large fashion sunglasses!).

I love the creativity that went into putting this outfit together! The silver strappy sandals complement the bold print skirt and match her chunky silver ring and pendant necklace. I accidentally had my camera set to manual focus (an amateur photographer’s worst nightmare) and coincidentally the camera chose to focus on her shoes!

The double breasted navy blazer, white sun hat and sneakers definitely give this ensemble a nautical feel. However I like the way the big dark fashion sunglasses and bright red beads keep the look quite urban.
