Poodle Alarm

This woman is wearing the few items she was able to salvage from the wreckage after a house fire and she still looks fantastic. Her poodle woke her up during the fire, saving both of their lives!

A hobby painter, this woman was enjoying a break from the sun at my favorite (secret!) beach in Vancouver. She swims, paints and picnics here with her family to celebrate the life of her son, who lost his life to cancer. I watched her for a while, not certain whether or not to approach her, but then she pulled out this jazzy beach chair and I somehow knew she’d let me snap her photo.

In their late eighties, this couple wanted to warm up a bit before heading into English Bay for a dip in the sea.

This retired MD had me at chain wallet. He was riffling through the section on archaeological digs, when a hint of metal threw me a punk little wink from an otherwise stately outfit. He was lovely and obliging.

My grandma and her sister-in-law are at Gun Lake near Braelorne, British Columbia. It’s 1945 or 1946.
My grandma wasn’t a high-maintenance woman. Time and money was scant, so her approach to style was modest and practical. She never wore her hair like this, so we assume it was a day for special hair. And how special it is! After a mad amount of pins, rollers, sprays, love and attention at Prep Work Hair Studio, my hair finally popped itself into the neat bouffant you see here.
I found the clothes at Salvation Army. They’re more ’90s bourgeois than ’40s military but I was able to use pins to wrangle the outfit into a decent replica of my grandma’s (way cooler) suit.
If nothing else, my ancestral photo remake should make you think, “I can do better than that!”

What a sweet little sideshow! This feather treasure was an earthy treat against all the foam flowers for sale in Maui’s resort areas. She was selling them under a giant Banyan tree in Lahaina. Hair accessories — especially feathers — are everywhere right now. It likely all started with this:
Sarah Jessica Parker’s unruly bird hat.

This fresh-faced pair met on a cruise to South America. When a nasty case of seasickness struck the ship, these two felt nary a pang! Bonded by iron stomachs, they’ve traveled together ever since. I spotted them many times after this day, and whether drinking mai tais by the pool or sampling Whipped Lightening at the bar, they looked fabulous and seemed to be having a wonderful time. Consider me inspired.

I found Maui gold! This vintage ’60s Hawaiian jumpsuit was a gift from her parents, who vacationed here when the islands were in the thick of Hawaii Five-O fever. I love a 79-year-old who isn’t afraid to show some leg.

I met this woman at a social event. She arrived straight from the paddock, looking superhumanly fit and cool. At 80-something, this athletic gran rides horses with her granddaughters every week. Her riding gear is gritty with remnants of horsey activity but she somehow looks ripe for a cocktail party with pearls, a wicker bag and stellar pink lipstick.
