Although we don’t typically do pairs, I couldn’t pass up on this dynamic duo. Her bold prints next to his muted tones made for the perfect balance. Bill and Vonnie worked in the film industry for several years and were no strangers to the camera – they were more than happy to pose for me. These two were full of energy which they attribute to their jive dancing classes – it seems to be working for them….they look great!
This fellow was gracious enough to let me walk him up the street to take his photo in front of the brand new Tommy Douglas Library in Burnaby (named after the first Socialist leader in Canada and grandad to Kiefer Sutherland). I think this man looks wonderful in his crisp white shirt, a look appropriate for both the female and male of the silver class.
This woman knew “casual chic” long before Katie Holmes (see below). Her high waisted pants and matching flats, patterned blouse and cardi pull together nicely to create a look that stars are now wearing.
This gentleman had the courage to mix and match his stripes, plaid and polka dots, something I always appreciate in men’s fashion. Give me super chic (think black, tapered pants) or give me wacky (think bold colours and mix and match patterns).
I saw this fellow across the crowd at the 20th anniversary of Under the Volcano, an “Art & Social Change” festival. His black riding boots are perfect for Vancouver’s climate (rain) and his military jacket is the perfect battledress for a festival bringing together revolutionaries.
There is so much to say about this woman! The skirt was a dress she wore in the ’60s. She converted it to a skirt because she doesn’t like to go sleeveless anymore. At 78, she’s a retired geological engineer and an art lover who weaves tapestries in her spare time. She finds store-bought clothing hard to fit, so she makes her own. She has a city home and country home (teeming with tapestries) and she takes her creative cues from the Coast Mountains. Phew, what a stylish and interesting character!
This isn’t exactly street fashion but I had to capture the imperial splendor on display here. The day was a scorcher and these gentlemen, wrapped in layers of gilt ribbon and red cloth, attracted a small crowd on Granville Street. These Ottoman outfits inspired much Turquerie in 17th century Europe. Dazzling!
My heart leaped at the sight of this woman! She looks so relaxed and gutsy at the same time. Bold lipstick, bold specs and bold toes combined with a subdued gray outfit — it’s the perfect mellow-bold mix.
Not to play favorites but she was one of my best subjects yet. At the end of our session, we had a should-we-hug-or-should-we-handshake moment. We hugged!

This woman was an Avon Lady in the late ’60s. With the iconic pink smock and a case full of talcs, she kept housewives dewy-fresh! Her bob with fringe is my favorite hairstyle for white-haired women. I’ve seen it a few times now and it’s a winning coif for sure.
This is the way the umbrella was meant to be used: as a quaint little hideaway on a hot summer’s day. Looking gorgeous for her 78th birthday lunch, this woman shared a fashion tip with me. When someone disapproves of your style, push on! Just say to yourself, “To heck with it,” and go about the business of looking good.
